Some Blog Traffic Remedies - Getting More Directory/Search Engine Referrals
Whenever I write a new entry for any of my blogs, there are two activities that I make sure I perform:
(1) Categorizing/tagging my posts.
(2) Pinging blog engines and directories
The first activity, often known as "tagging", has brought me a reasonable percentage of traffic from Technorati compared to when I didn't categorize my posts. But Technorati isn't the only blog-listing service you can use. Try Del.icio.us, Ice Rocket, BuzzNet and others.
Each service has their own way of tagging, so do a bit of research first. I've only been using Technorati for the last couple of months because I'm most familiar with it. However, Del.icio.us has a huge buzz growing around, so it may be worth it to you to explore their tagging.
One thing to consider is using a blogging client that aids you in tagging. I use my ever-favourite BlogWriter by Zoundry. BlogWriter sets up the tags for you, if you feed it categories. You simply choose the service you want tags for, type in various relevant categories, and when you post, BlogWriter will create the necessary HTML for your entry.
The second activity, pinging, is just as important, if not more so. Pinging a blog listings service simply is a way of signalling that your blog has been updated, and could they kindly send their spider over to index it. The more you post and ping together, the higher your relevance ranking (and "freshness") in the listing service you've pinged (as well as the search engines).<
In fact, when I was unable to use Pingoat.com to ping this blog, I used Pingomatic, which while helpful, always seems to produce less traffic for me. However, there may be other factors I haven't taken into account.
Nevertheless, for parts of 3 weeks in November, when I was unable to ping BlogSpinner V2.0 with Pingoat (which marked this blog as a splog), my BlogTopSites ranking dropped significantly and I have yet to climb back up. This is turn caused me frustration and I stopped posting, turning my efforts to other blogs.
So, in addition to actually writing and posting blog entries, combining tagging and pinging together is a crucial technique for promoting your blog. Build your own categories, including using the name of your blog, to make it easier for people to find you. Have a look at the end of my entries to see what I have done. (Zoundry's BlogWriter has automatically generated the HTML for the tags.)
